Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued an apology on behalf of the federal government for the casualties resulting from a recent military airstrike in Sokoto State. He also called on communities in conflict-prone areas to assist the military with actionable intelligence to enhance the precision of their operations against terrorist groups.

In a statement by his media assistant, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives during the December 25, 2024, joint military operation targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that at least 10 villagers were killed and several others injured when the military struck a logistics base used by the insurgents. Shettima described the incident as a tragic but rare occurrence where innocent civilians were caught in the crossfire of efforts to eradicate terrorism.

“I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives in the coordinated operation by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma,” Shettima said.

“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues in these extremely difficult times. I call for understanding, especially when it is considered that our gallant Armed Forces were fighting and paying the supreme price to protect the lives of those caught in the crossfire,” he added.

The Vice President reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, pledging that the administration of President Bola Tinubu would not relent in its efforts to restore peace and security across the country.

“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to continue to provide our brave officers with the support and assistance they need to ensure accurate and effective operations,” Shettima said.

He called for community collaboration, noting that security is a shared responsibility. “Together, we can make a difference. The administration of President Bola Tinubu is determined to weed out what is left of terror elements in Nigeria and ensure a peaceful nation where citizens can live and work without fear,” he assured.

Condolence Visit to Jigawa State

In addition to addressing the Sokoto airstrike, Shettima led a delegation to Jigawa State to condole with Governor Umar Namadi over the loss of his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, within 24 hours.

Shettima, accompanied by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and other dignitaries, described death as an inevitable reality and prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family.

“We are all from Allah and to Him, we shall return. Our deeds in this world are the baggage we carry to the hereafter,” he remarked during the visit.

The Vice President’s dual engagements highlight the federal government’s focus on addressing national security challenges while demonstrating compassion and solidarity with affected communities.
