Security operatives in Zamfara and Borno states have recorded major breakthroughs in ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations, killing eight suspected bandits and recovering several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in separate incidents.

In Zamfara, a joint security team made up of Nigeria Police operatives and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) repelled a bandit ambush in Fegin Kanawa village, located within the Wonaka District of Gusau Local Government Area.

Acting on credible intelligence about a planned attack, the team had mobilised from Fegin Mahe village and was subsequently ambushed by the armed gang, who had taken strategic positions in the area.

A fierce exchange of gunfire followed, resulting in the deaths of eight suspected bandits, while others escaped with gunshot wounds into the nearby forest.

Police authorities have since launched a manhunt to track down the fleeing suspects.

During the operation, one officer, Inspector Tasi’u Lawali of the 42 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Gusau, sustained gunshot injuries to his hand and mouth.

He was quickly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Gusau, where he is currently receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition.

Meanwhile, in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, troops of Operation HADIN KAI have uncovered and safely detonated 14 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in a major counter-IED operation.

The explosives, discovered in Bitta and surrounding communities, were planted in farmlands, access roads, and footpaths used frequently by civilians and military personnel.

Security sources believe the devices were intended to target both residents and troops conducting clearance operations in the area.

Military bomb disposal units safely neutralised all 14 devices, while further clearance operations continue to ensure safe movement and farming activities in the region.

The Nigerian military and police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying security efforts in the affected areas to protect lives, restore order, and eliminate remaining threats.
