Prince Adewole Adebayo, the leader and former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last general election, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its disconnect between government actions and the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
In a recent interview, Adebayo expressed concern that while the government urges Nigerians to tighten their belts, officials continue to live lavishly, sending a contradictory message to the public.
Adebayo argued that the Tinubu administration risks undermining its own authority through unpopular policies and actions that do not align with the expectations of the Nigerian Constitution. “The constitution expects the government to work for the good, order, and welfare of the people,” Adebayo said. “It is indisputable, even within government circles, that the Tinubu administration has not fulfilled this constitutional mandate.”
He went on to highlight the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria under the current government. “We lack peace, justice, development, and economic relief. Instead, additional problems have been imposed on the people due to the ideological decisions made by the APC, from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure to President Tinubu’s.
Over nine and a half years, these wrong-headed policies have only worsened matters,” Adebayo remarked, adding that despite any good intentions, the results have been far from satisfactory.
When asked about the administration’s claims of only having been in office for one year and distancing itself from Buhari’s legacy, Adebayo pointed to inconsistencies in the government’s actions.
“They claim the fuel subsidy is gone, yet payments continue. A new presidential aircraft was secretly purchased, and the public only learned of it due to a seizure by a Chinese firm. This highlights ongoing issues with transparency in government,” Adebayo concluded.
