Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has directed the State Civil Service Commission to ensure that no Information and Communications Technology (ICT) staff are promoted without certification from the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN).
The CPN, established by Decree No. 49 of 1993, oversees and regulates the computing profession in Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigeria Computer Society.
Fubara issued this directive during a dinner for delegates of the 2024 International Conference of the Nigeria Computer Society at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Thursday night.
According to a statement from the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chulwudi, this policy aims to eliminate quackery in the ICT sector and promote the effective deployment of technology within the state’s civil service.
“The goal is to drive out quacks and uphold the profession’s integrity,” Fubara said.
“Having been a civil servant myself, I understand the importance of proper procedures and certification. We are committed to supporting this association and ensuring its recognition within the state.”
Fubara highlighted that his administration’s focus on ICT has significantly improved the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which has more than doubled, and fully automated the civil service.
He emphasized the importance of technology in enhancing state governance and service delivery, stating, “Our primary interest is to improve the state.
We aim to add value and ensure that our legacy is one of progress and innovation.”
