The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced the screening of commissioner nominees forwarded by the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for appointment into the State Executive Council.

Lawmakers began the process on Monday as part of constitutional procedures required before nominees can be confirmed and assume office as commissioners in the state government.

The screening follows the governor’s submission of a list of nominees to the assembly for consideration and approval. According to reports, the list contains nine individuals nominated to serve as members of the cabinet.

The nominees include Professor Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, Otonye Amachree, and Amairigha Edward Hart.

Earlier, the assembly had formally invited the nominees to appear before lawmakers and submit required documentation ahead of the screening. The notice stated: “The Rivers State House of Assembly hereby invites nominees for appointment as commissioners and members of the Rivers State Executive Council to submit forty (40) sets of their Curriculum vitae, photocopies of credentials and evidence of compliance with tax obligations.”

The reconstitution of the cabinet comes after a recent shake-up in the state government that saw the dissolution of the previous executive council.

Once the screening process is concluded, the Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to decide whether to confirm the nominees, paving the way for their formal appointment into the state’s executive council.
