Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, reiterated their commitment to maintaining peaceful relations between their states amid ongoing disputes over the ownership of the Soku Oil Wells and Bayelsa’s properties in Port Harcourt.
The reaffirmation of this commitment came during a Christmas visit by Governor Diri and a delegation of Bayelsa State officials to Governor Fubara at the Government House in Port Harcourt, following Fubara’s earlier visit to Yenagoa.
Governor Diri expressed his appreciation for Fubara’s peaceful approach in resolving the long-standing disputes, particularly in reaching a truce over the contentious Soku Oil Wells and the previous administration’s actions regarding Bayelsa State properties, which had resulted in a Supreme Court case.
Governor Fubara, in his remarks, underscored the historical connection between the two states, which were once united as a single entity, and highlighted the importance of fostering cooperation for mutual benefit.
He emphasized that his administration’s efforts to settle these issues amicably were in the best interest of both states.
Fubara also called for a strengthened BRACE Commission, a regional body comprising Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Edo states, to drive development and enhance regional integration.
