The Edo State Police Command, initiated an investigation into the death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, following an altercation with police officers in Benin City.

In a statement by the acting NLC Chairman, Comrade Joman Bernard, Eboigbodin reportedly slumped during the dispute and died while being rushed to the hospital.

“The operatives might not have directly caused his death, but after escalating the situation that led to his untimely demise, they fled, leaving him struggling for his life.

His wife eventually secured help, but he passed away on the way to the hospital,” Bernard stated.

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Sokponba Road, between Gorreti and Welfare Junction.

Bernard lamented that the officer’s lack of concern for the citizenry they are tasked to protect contributed to the tragic outcome.

Reacting to public outcry, the Edo State Police Command expressed condolences and assured the public of a thorough investigation.

In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, conveyed the Commissioner of Police, CP Umoru P. Ozigi’s, sympathies to the deceased’s family and friends.

“The Commissioner of Police wishes to commiserate with the widow, family, and associates of the deceased and prays for the repose of his soul,” Yamu stated.

Highlighting the police’s cordial relationship with the NLC, civil society groups, and other stakeholders, the Command pledged to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served.

“The Command remains committed to the rule of law and will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

The NLC has called for justice and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
