The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged torture and death of Abdulmujid Oduga, a newlywed, while in custody at Ikota Police Post, Ajah, Lagos.
In a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and the complainant involved in the case. He also disclosed that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death, with appropriate actions to follow based on the findings.
“Investigations have since commenced. The Investigating Police Officer and the complainant are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba. Meanwhile, an autopsy is about to be carried out to determine the cause of death, after which further necessary actions will follow.
“Members of the public are assured that a thorough investigation will be carried out and any person(s) found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement read.
Reports indicate that Oduga was arrested on February 11 following a dispute with a female neighbor. He was allegedly tortured during his detention, leading to his death.
A relative of the deceased, identified as @Omoiyacele on social media platform X, accused the police of torturing Oduga and later dumping his body at a morgue in Epe. He revealed that Oduga had married just four months earlier and demanded an investigation into the incident.
“My cousin, Late Abdulmujid Igbamitayo Oduga, was murdered by @PoliceNG just because of a mere misunderstanding between him and his neighbor. He died at the Ikota Police Post under Ajiwe Police Station. The corpse was deposited at Epe.
“We urge the Nigeria Police to help our family look into this matter for a clear and true picture of the matter for us to know the particular person that killed our beloved son who just got married not up to four months ago,” he wrote.
Another relative, @Cherub, called for justice, stating, “A brother was murdered at Ikota police post in collaboration with Ajah police station. This can’t continue in our nation. We want justice.”
Family members alleged that Oduga, described as the breadwinner of his family, was denied access to contact his loved ones during his detention. They have demanded accountability and justice for his death.
