Tension gripped Kano on Friday, as police allegedly barricaded the palace of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, preventing him from attending a royal ceremony in Bichi Local Government Area.
The event, set to feature the presentation of a staff of office to a new District Head of Bichi, was disrupted when security operatives reportedly blocked the Emir’s departure.
According to a source within the Kano Emirate, heavily armed officers, including those in armoured personnel carriers (APCs), cordoned off the palace entrance, restricting movement.
“The Emir has been on the phone trying to understand what is happening.
He was prepared to leave for the ceremony when the security operatives arrived and ordered him to remain indoors,” a palace insider revealed.
Efforts by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to mediate were reportedly obstructed, as his delegation was denied access to the palace.
“His Excellency sent representatives to meet with the Emir and resolve the issue, but they were stopped at the barricade,” a source close to the governor stated.
The ceremony venue in Bichi was also reportedly sealed off by security forces, leaving attendees and organizers stranded.
When contacted, Kano State Police Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Haruna declined to comment, stating, “I cannot comment on the matter at this time.”
The incident has fueled widespread speculation, with many suggesting potential political undertones, though the reasons behind the action remain unclear.
Neither the state government nor the Emirate Council has issued an official statement.
The situation continues to unfold, raising concerns over the implications for Kano’s traditional institutions and governance.
