Deputy spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has praised President Bola Tinubu for responding to the House’s request to upgrade Speaker Tajudeen Abbas’ national honour from Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) to Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
The request was initially raised by Agbese during a plenary session, highlighting that the House of Representatives should not be seen as inferior to the Senate.
The President acknowledged this call and, in his Independence Day speech, conferred various national honours, including the GCON, on notable figures like Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
While grateful for the upgrade of Abbas’ honour, Agbese has now urged President Tinubu to elevate Deputy Speaker Kalu’s honour from Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) to CFR, drawing comparisons to the status accorded to the Deputy Senate President.
Agbese remarked, “This is about institutions, not individuals. We hope Mr President will continue to correct these historical imbalances.”
