Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has called on the Nigerian government to prioritize the creation of sustainable livelihoods for its citizens to help prevent tragedies such as the recent tanker explosion in Jigawa State. Obi shared his concerns in a message posted on his X account, describing the explosion, which claimed over 180 lives and left more than 80 people hospitalized, as a national disaster.
Expressing his condolences to Governor Umar Namadi Dan Modi and the people of Jigawa, Obi pledged financial support to the victims and their families. He lamented the increasing frequency of such tragic incidents across Nigeria, urging both divine intervention and practical solutions from government authorities.
Obi emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure and enforcing safety regulations to prevent future disasters, noting that many victims were young individuals in their prime. “This is a devastating loss for the nation. I extend my prayers to the families of those who passed and to the injured,” Obi stated.
While commending ongoing government efforts to support the victims, Obi urged all levels of government to take decisive action in providing sustainable livelihoods for citizens. He warned that without such measures, the risks to lives and the potential for further tragedies would only increase.
