The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary, following a meeting held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
The decision came after thorough deliberation on a memo dated February 11, 2025, submitted by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagun.
The memo addressed the status of the National Secretary position, prompting the NWC to review legal documents and court judgments related to the matter.
Among the documents considered were the Declaratory Judgment of the High Court of Enugu State and the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, which officially recognized Udeh-Okoye as the PDP National Secretary.
Additionally, legal opinions from Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Kabiru T. Turaki, and the PDP’s National Legal Adviser were examined before reaching a conclusion.
A statement issued by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, confirmed that the NWC, after extensive review, unanimously recognized and affirmed Udeh-Okoye’s position in compliance with the Court of Appeal’s judgment.
The committee emphasized that no existing or superior court ruling contradicts this decision.
Following the resolution, the party has initiated the process of transmitting its official decision to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to ensure formal recognition of Udeh-Okoye’s position.
The NWC also commended party leaders, stakeholders, and members for their commitment to upholding the rule of law and remaining loyal to the PDP during this period.
It reassured members of its dedication to the party’s constitution, democratic principles, and the stability of the party.
The decision follows a leadership tussle over the National Secretary position.
Former occupant Senator Samuel Anyanwu had vacated the office to contest as the PDP candidate in the 2023 Imo State governorship election, paving the way for Udeh-Okoye’s appointment. The latest ruling and NWC resolution now settle the dispute, solidifying Udeh-Okoye’s status within the party.
