The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch an investigation into Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s N30 billion street fencing project in Sokoto metropolis.
The PDP expressed concern over what it describes as reckless spending by the current administration, claiming the project is an unnecessary waste of public resources.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the party’s Public Relations Officer, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinawal, the PDP questioned the financial practices of the state government under Governor Aliyu.
The party called for a thorough examination of the project and raised concerns over the administration’s financial management.
The call for the EFCC probe comes shortly after the Sokoto State government filed a petition with the state’s Commission of Inquiry, accusing the previous administration, led by Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, of mismanaging N16.1 billion through the state’s investment company.
The PDP, however, dismissed the allegations and reiterated its willingness to cooperate with any investigation into the actions of the former governor and his officials.
The PDP condemned the street fencing project as a clear example of financial recklessness, arguing that the state’s economic challenges do not justify such expenditures.
It also cited another instance of alleged mismanagement, referring to the N1.2 billion spent on repairing 25 boreholes, which the party described as an extravagant and wasteful use of funds.
According to the PDP, Governor Aliyu’s administration is attempting to divert attention from its failures by accusing the Tambuwal administration of corruption.
The party defended Senator Tambuwal’s tenure, claiming it was one of the most transparent in the state’s history and had been acknowledged as such by international assessment bodies.
The PDP further criticized the state government’s approach to procurement, accusing Governor Aliyu of bypassing proper procedures in awarding contracts for various projects, including the repair of roundabouts and archways in Sokoto.
The party alleged that contracts were awarded without the approval of the State Executive Council or through public tender, instead favoring contractors selected through patronage.
The PDP concluded by demanding that both the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) conduct a full investigation into the N30 billion street fencing project.
The party insisted that such a probe is necessary to ensure transparency and justice for the people of Sokoto State.
