Negotiations for minimum wage adjustments in Oyo State are set to begin tomorrow between representatives of the state government and organized labour. The talks follow Governor Seyi Makinde’s announcement of a proposed N70,000 minimum wage, which is contingent on reaching a mutual agreement on consequential salary adjustments.
As a temporary relief, the governor extended a wage award of N25,000 for employees and N15,000 for pensioners for an additional three months. The upcoming discussions will focus on the government’s proposed salary adjustments across various grades.
Labour representatives, however, are pushing for the inclusion of the Federal Government’s adjustment template as a basis for negotiations. They have also raised concerns about the government’s classification of its negotiation team members. Organized labour plans to formally request that Martins Kayode, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Council (NLC), be recognized as the NLC Chairman during the talks rather than as a representative of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria.
In addition, they are demanding the inclusion of Seun Olanipekun, Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Council, in all negotiation councils, rather than just Council 2. They are also requesting that Bosun Olabiyi be identified as the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman, as opposed to being classified differently.
The outcome of these negotiations will be critical in determining how the new wage structure is implemented across the state.
