Reports from Turkish media indicate that Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, who recently made his much-anticipated debut for Galatasaray, may face restrictions on wearing his protective face mask during matches in Turkey.
The controversy follows an incident in Galatasaray’s 4-1 victory over Çaykur Rizespor, where Osimhen’s mask became a focal point after a collision with Çaykur Rizespor’s Khusniddin Alikulov, which resulted in Alikulov sustaining a concussion.
Despite initial concerns, Alikulov did not suffer a facial fracture.
However, the incident has ignited debate over whether Osimhen’s mask, which includes metal fasteners, poses a risk to other players.
This scrutiny has intensified because Osimhen suffered a severe injury during a 2021 match against Inter Milan while on loan from Napoli.
That injury required surgery, during which six plates and 18 screws were inserted into his face, sidelining him for three months.
The protective mask Osimhen has worn since his injury has drawn criticism in Turkey, with concerns about its safety implications.
Although there is currently no official report or decision on the matter, some Turkish football circles and media outlets have raised questions.
A Turkish social media user criticized the mask, claiming it was made of metal and caused Alikulov’s cheekbone to break.
Meanwhile, Turkish media outlet Aslinda published a report titled, “Is it forbidden for Galatasaray star Osimhen to wear a mask”?.
Former referee Fırat Aydınus commented on the issue, saying that referees are responsible for ensuring the safety of accessories worn by players.
“The referee can tell you not to wear it if the accessory you wear harms both your opponent’s and your own health,” Aydınus stated.
The mask, which includes metal fasteners, is considered potentially dangerous to opponents.
In July 2022, Napoli’s doctor Roberto Ruggiero explained why Osimhen continued to use the mask even after recovering from his head injury.
Despite the concerns, Osimhen’s performance on the pitch remains unaffected, scoring 33 goals in the 2022/23 season to help lead Napoli to the Serie A title.
Osimhen could be set to lead Galatasaray’s attack against Jose Mourinho’s team in an upcoming match.
The former Lille forward has previously scored three goals in six encounters against Mourinho’s side, showcasing his continued form despite the ongoing mask debate.
