The Ogun State House of Assembly has summoned the executives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and officials from the Ministry of Transportation to address the escalating crisis within the union. The meeting is scheduled for October 22, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
This decision follows concerns raised by Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, who warned of an alleged attempt by union members to disrupt public order, particularly in the Ogun-East region.
Speaker Oludaisi Elemide emphasized the assembly’s commitment to ensuring peace and security across the state, stressing the need for intervention when necessary. He further urged security agencies to work with the government to maintain stability.
Adeleye pointed out that transport unions are established through legislation, underlining the importance of governmental oversight to prevent unrest. In addition, the Speaker called for heightened security measures to address the increase in cult-related violence in the state, referencing the recent killing of Adeleke Adeyinka, an APC councillorship candidate, ahead of the local government elections scheduled for November 16.
Elemide also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities to promote peace and foster a harmonious society.
