Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are currently in talks with Federal Government officials at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, addressing concerns over the recent hike in fuel prices.
Among the government representatives at the meeting are Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser; Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of Labour; Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; as well as Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information.
Also in attendance are Heineken Lokpobiri and Ekperikpe Ekpo, both Ministers of State for Petroleum, along with representatives from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
The NLC had earlier expressed strong opposition to the nationwide increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), calling for an immediate reversal.
The union, through a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, criticized the government’s perceived focus on raising fuel prices without addressing the wider impact on Nigerians.
The NLC also demanded clarity on the government’s long-term economic plans.
Further details of the meeting are expected to follow.
