The Nigeria Police Force has issued a wanted notice for British national Andrew Wynne, also known as Andrew Povich, and Nigerian citizen Lucky Obiyan.
The duo is accused of conspiring to overthrow the democratically elected government in the country. The announcement was made on Monday as authorities intensified their search for the suspects.
This announcement was made during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
According to the police, Wynne, who also goes by the names Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, is accused of establishing a network of sleeper cells aimed at toppling the government and inciting nationwide chaos.
He reportedly rented a space at Labour House in Abuja under the guise of operating a bookshop and a school, both of which were allegedly used as covers for his subversive activities.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, detailed the findings of the investigation, which suggests that Wynne and his collaborators were involved in funding violent protests and spreading false information to destabilize the nation. “Preliminary findings suggest they orchestrated and funded violent protests, disseminated false information, and engaged in other unlawful activities to create anarchy and justify their illegal plot to overthrow the democratically elected government,” Adejobi stated.
Further, the police revealed that Wynne had provided financial and operational support to Nigerian associates, urging them to incite violence and provoke international condemnation of the Nigerian government.
Adejobi emphasized the severity of these actions, noting that they are in clear violation of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011 and other relevant laws.
Since the investigation began, both Wynne and Obiyan have reportedly fled the country.
The police have now issued an international alert, seeking assistance from global law enforcement agencies to track down and apprehend the suspects.
This high-profile investigation underscores the ongoing vigilance of Nigerian security agencies in protecting the country’s democracy from both internal and external threats.
As the situation develops, the police have assured the public of their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and stability of the nation.
More details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
