The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka has arrested three individuals suspected of crude oil theft, seizing a boat containing crude oil valued at ₦32 million in Akwa Ibom State.

Captain Uche Aneke, Commanding Officer of FOB Ibaka, announced the arrest on Thursday while handing over the suspects and seized items to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Akwa Ibom.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday around 9:05 am following intelligence reports indicating criminal activities involving crude oil theft within the Navy’s operational area.

“With the necessary support of FOB Ibaka, the Tantita team intercepted and arrested the suspected criminals with a wooden boat discovered to be laden with about 60,000 liters of product suspected to be stolen crude oil,” Captain Aneke stated.

Additional items seized included outboard engines and a pumping machine.

Aneke noted that the vessel had three Nigerian crew members on board and contained 11 Geepee tanks loaded with approximately 60,000 liters of suspected stolen crude oil.

The product was allegedly loaded offshore near Ibeno, Akwa Ibom.

Captain Aneke issued a warning to anyone planning to engage in illegal activities within Nigerian waters, advising them to reconsider.

“Individuals or groups planning any form of criminality in Nigerian waters or attempting to smuggle illegal consignments in or out of our waters should desist immediately,” he stated.

He further reaffirmed the Navy’s dedication to combating maritime crime in the region, under the guidance of Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
