The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), confirmed that it has met the deadline for submitting an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which was set for March 28, 2025.
However, the country can only move forward with a formal bid if it receives the full backing of the Nigerian government.
This marks Nigeria’s second attempt to host the prestigious event, following its loss to Glasgow in the race to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
In a statement issued by NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya, the committee emphasized that Nigeria’s bid to host the 2030 Games in its capital city, Abuja, presents a unique opportunity to highlight the country’s development, improve its global profile, and invigorate its sports culture.
The last time Nigeria hosted a major multi-sport event was in 2003, when the African Games were held in Abuja.
The NOC expressed confidence that this experience would serve as a solid foundation for the country’s ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure required for large-scale events like the Commonwealth Games.
“The experience from hosting the African Games will be instrumental in ensuring Nigeria’s readiness to host the Commonwealth Games, demonstrating our capacity in areas such as logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality,” the statement read.
“It will also serve as a compelling narrative of the nation’s progress and preparedness,”the statement continued.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will once again be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026.
Originally, the Australian state of Victoria had been scheduled to host the Games, but the local government withdrew due to escalating costs.
