The Nigerian wine market is increasingly gaining attention from U.S. and California wine exporters, with industry experts highlighting its vast potential for growth.
At the 2025 California Wine Tasting Tour Africa, held at the Marriott Hotel in Lagos, Victor Ikem, founder of Drinks Revolution Limited and a leading figure in Nigeria’s wine and spirits sector, emphasized the country’s status as a prime opportunity for American wine producers.
As Africa’s fastest-growing economy, Nigeria boasts a rapidly expanding consumer base with an increasing appetite for international wine brands.
Ikem pointed to shifting global trade dynamics as a factor boosting the country’s appeal, noting that rising tariffs and trade tensions between the U.S., Europe, and Asia have prompted businesses to explore African markets.
Although European producers have traditionally dominated Nigeria’s wine and spirits industry, he believes U.S. wineries can establish a strong foothold with the right approach.
Success in the Nigerian market, Ikem explained, requires more than just exporting products. He stressed the importance of building relationships with reliable local importers and distributors, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements—particularly those set by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)—and investing in brand awareness, product knowledge, and consumer education.
Long-term investment and collaboration, rather than short-term transactional strategies, will be crucial for sustained success.
Despite challenges such as logistics, high shipping costs, and the need for trusted distribution partners, Ikem maintained that the rewards outweigh the obstacles.
He advocated for wine education initiatives, including training programs and masterclasses, to deepen consumer appreciation of U.S. wines in Nigeria.
The 2025 California Wine Tasting Tour Africa, which includes stops in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, showcases over 150 wines from 15 award-winning California wineries.
Featured regions include Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Monterey, and Paso Robles. The event serves as a platform for U.S. wine producers to connect with African trade partners and distribution networks.
Honore Comfort, Vice President of International Marketing at the California Wine Institute, expressed confidence in Nigeria’s potential, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to providing high-quality wines that reflect California’s renowned standards.
The tour aims to strengthen trade relationships, introduce African consumers to the diversity of California wines, and lay the groundwork for long-term partnerships in the region.
