Nigeria has come out on top with a thrilling 53-52 win over Ghana in the much-anticipated 2024 Battle of Jollof, reclaiming bragging rights in the annual cultural showdown.
Held for the fourth time, this year’s event combined a competitive basketball game, a jollof rice tasting, and energetic Afrobeats and Amapiano performances, celebrating the vibrant diaspora cultures of both nations.
In 2023, two-time NBA All-Star Victor Oladipo and ESPN’s Ros Gold-Onwude led Team Nigeria, but this year, D’Tigress head coach Rena Wakama took the reins. The event has consistently attracted big names; last year saw appearances by NBA star Oladipo, New York Giants player Kayvon Thibodeaux, and musician Jidenna.
This year’s contest was a nail-biter, with Team Nigeria securing a one-point edge over Team Ghana in the final moments. “Naija no dey carry last!” resonated in the crowd as Nigeria seized victory in this spirited display of friendly rivalry.
The cultural competition, blending sport and culinary pride, has sparked debates and rivalries beyond the court. Even former UFC titleholder Israel Adesanya previously weighed in on the jollof rivalry, declaring his support for Nigerian jollof.
The Battle of Jollof continues to grow as a celebration of African excellence, with Nigeria’s recent win setting the stage for next year’s edition and adding yet another layer to the ongoing debate over whose jollof reigns supreme.
