Niger State Government, announced plans to remove unqualified teachers from classrooms in a bid to improve the quality of education across the state.
Additionally, the government has instructed retired teachers residing in school staff quarters to vacate their accommodations to make way for newly recruited teachers.
Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, the Commissioner for Basic Education, made the announcement during the Annual General Meeting of the Bida Old Students Association (BOSA) at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre in Minna, the state capital.
She revealed that the government is conducting a comprehensive screening of all teachers, with an emphasis on implementing training and retraining programs.
However, she made it clear that those deemed untrainable will be removed from the education system to ensure that students receive high-quality instruction.
“The state will not allow anyone to enter the teaching profession without undergoing proper screening.
Only those who are trainable will remain.
Teachers recruited by the Parents Teachers Association will also undergo screening and will be retained if they meet the required standards.
Additionally, we will reinstate the National Career Path Policy to support the professional development of teachers,” Dr. Mohammed said.
At the meeting, Major General Abdulmalik Halidu Giwa, the National President of BOSA, acknowledged the efforts of alumni from Government College, Bida, who have made individual and collective contributions to the school.
However, he stressed the need for further action to address the school’s ongoing infrastructure challenges.
Alhaji Muhammadu Agwai, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, voiced concerns over the deteriorating state of the college’s infrastructure and called for greater support from alumni to prevent further decline.
The event also included an awards ceremony to recognize distinguished alumni, with notable honorees including former military head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former military governor of Kano State Colonel Sani Bello, and 15 other individuals for their outstanding contributions.
