Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has shared details of how the Super Eagles players and officials managed to get food during the challenging situation they faced in Libya.
The Nigerian team arrived at Aminu Kano International Airport on Monday evening, after the federal government directed their return amid ongoing investigations by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) into the poor treatment they received in Libya. This followed Nigeria’s victory over Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, ahead of the AFCON 2025 Qualifier return leg scheduled for Benghazi.
The team had expected to land at Benina International Airport, but their chartered flight was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abraq International Airport, primarily used for hajj operations. Upon arrival, no representatives from the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) were present to receive them, violating established protocol.
Efforts by the NFF to arrange transportation to Benghazi were obstructed when airport officials refused access to their bus, leaving the team stranded overnight at the airport.
Olajire recounted how the Nigerian delegation managed to secure food during the ordeal. “At daybreak, Mr. Maurice Eromosele, president of the Nigerian community in Eastern Libya, arrived with messages of empathy from Nigeria’s Ambassador to Libya, Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad. Shocked by the treatment the team endured, he returned with bags of croissants and drinks, which served as breakfast for the players and officials,” Olajire said.
The incident has prompted widespread criticism, as the NFF awaits the outcome of CAF’s investigation.
