The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced plans to hold a stakeholders’ forum on Thursday, following increasing concerns over the repeated national power grid collapses.

In a statement released via its social media platforms on Sunday, the commission stated that the public hearing is in line with Section 48, Subsection 1 of the amended Electricity Act 2023.

The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, at NERC’s Hearing Room, Fourth Floor, Plot 1387, Cadastral Zone A0O, Central Business District, Abuja, starting at 10:00 am.

“In accordance with Section 48, Subsection 1 of the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission is required to hold public hearings on critical issues concerning the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry,” the commission said.

NERC further expressed concern about the recent rise in grid disturbances, which have resulted in widespread outages across several states, undoing many of the recent improvements in grid stability and infrastructure development.

“In this regard, the commission invites NESI stakeholders, civil society organizations, and the general public to the hearing,” the statement concluded.

It was previously reported that the national grid collapsed three times in the past week, raising questions about the government’s efforts to meet its target of increasing power generation to 6,000 megawatts by the end of the year.
