The Acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Chris Najomo, has raised concerns over the increasing rate of flight cancellations and delays in the country, revealing that at least 190 flights were cancelled within two months.
Speaking at the Airlines-NCAA engagement event on Friday, Najomo highlighted the alarming trend, noting that flight disruptions have become a critical issue requiring immediate attention.
According to the acting DG, data from September 2024 shows that out of 5,291 domestic flights operated, 2,434 were delayed, and 79 were cancelled. In October 2024, the situation worsened, with 2,791 delays and 111 cancellations out of 5,513 flights.
“Delays and cancellations are sometimes inevitable, but poor management of these disruptions is not,” Najomo stated. “It’s the responsibility of airlines to ensure that every disruption—whether due to operational, technical, or weather-related challenges—is handled with the utmost professionalism and regard for passengers’ rights, especially during this harmattan season, which is characterized by poor weather conditions affecting flight operations.”
Najomo further reminded airline operators of their legal obligations under the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023. “I must emphasize that these regulations regarding passenger rights during disruptions are not optional; they are mandatory obligations,” he said.
The NCAA has called on airlines to prioritize effective communication and support for passengers during disruptions, stressing the importance of maintaining trust and confidence in the aviation industry.
