The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and substandard products, including falsified drugs and medical devices, valued at ₦43 billion.
The destruction took place on Thursday at a dumpsite in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Christiana Adeyeye, who was represented by the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Shabba Mohammed, explained that the counterfeit products had been voluntarily surrendered by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations, and trade unions.
Adeyeye detailed that the seized products included aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and prescription-only medications.
“The confiscated products include banned Codeine substances, narcotic drugs, antimalarials, aphrodisiacs, analgesics, and antibiotics, with a value exceeding ₦48 million, all seized from drug hawkers,” she said.
NAFDAC also reported significant findings from raids conducted nationwide, including the illegal warehousing and distribution of Schedule One narcotics.
“Our Investigation and Enforcement Directorate raided several pharmaceutical warehouses and premises, seizing products worth over ₦700 million,” Adeyeye added.
In addition to pharmaceuticals, the agency destroyed contraband items such as illicit soaps, tomato paste, unregistered and counterfeit drinks, food products, perfumes, and body sprays.
Adeyeye urged the public to support NAFDAC’s efforts by reporting any unscrupulous manufacturers or vendors engaged in illegal practices to the nearest NAFDAC office for prompt action.
The destruction exercise was attended by security agencies, representatives from the Oyo State Government, and other stakeholders.
