The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) urged Nigerians to prioritize their health by getting tested for HIV As the holiday season draws near.
In a statement released on Sunday, signed by the agency’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe, NACA’s Director General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized that while Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, it also presents an opportunity to make responsible decisions regarding health.
“Knowing your HIV status is a powerful step towards safeguarding your health and protecting those around you,” Dr. Ilori said.
She encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide.
She acknowledged that HIV remains a significant public health concern but noted that with advancements in testing and treatment, it is no longer a death sentence.
Early diagnosis, Dr. Ilori stated, ensures access to life-saving medication and helps individuals lead healthier, longer lives.
While urging Nigerians to be cautious during the festive season with its increased social activities, Dr. Ilori also stressed the importance of safe practices.
“Use protection during sexual activities, and for those who choose abstinence, continue to uphold it as the safest option,” she added.
She further emphasized that ignorance is no longer an excuse, given the widespread availability of HIV testing and education, which equip individuals to make informed choices.
Dr. Ilori reaffirmed NACA’s ongoing commitment to reducing the spread of HIV and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria.
“This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting a nearby health facility or community testing center to know your HIV status.
Together, we can create a healthier, happier Nigeria,” she concluded.
