The Defence Headquarters, confirmed that the incident involving military personnel at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKDC) in Lagos is under thorough review, with a promise to impose sanctions on those found responsible.
A viral video that surfaced a few weeks ago showed armed soldiers in military uniforms storming the IKDC headquarters, causing staff members to flee for safety.
The disturbing footage quickly drew widespread attention and concern.
In an appearance on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” on Friday, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations at the Defence Headquarters, acknowledged that the incident stemmed from underlying issues.
However, he emphasized that the actions depicted in the video were not reflective of the military’s general conduct.
“What happened at Ikeja Disco is being taken seriously by both the Defence Headquarters and the Nigerian Air Force,” said Rear Admiral Bankole.
“Any necessary sanctions will be applied.
We have zero tolerance for such behavior, and we are addressing the issues between the Air Force and IKDC,” he continued.
He also highlighted the military’s increased efforts to engage in public sensitization, reinforcing that the primary role of the armed forces is to protect citizens.
“The military is here to protect you, and we are working on building better relationships with the civilian population,” he added.
Rear Admiral Bankole reassured the public that there is no reason to fear military personnel in uniform, as their duty is to ensure safety and security.
“People should not feel afraid when they see uniformed personnel; they are meant to protect you.
From the depot in Zaria to the NDA and NDC, we are committed to this message,” Rear Admiral Bankole stated.
He further emphasized that military service is a noble career, focused not only on safeguarding national borders but also on serving and protecting citizens.
“With the direction set by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, the military is on a path to earning the respect of the people,” he concluded.
