A tragic midnight accident on Thursday along the Iwo Road-Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, claimed the lives of five passengers, leaving one critically injured.
The collision involved a commercial Micra car and a truck.
According to the Oyo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash, which also left six passengers unharmed, was caused by route violations.
In a statement, the FRSC disclosed that the injured victim was rushed to a nearby hospital by the police before their officials arrived on the scene.
The identities of the deceased remain unconfirmed, but their bodies have been transferred to the morgue.
The Sector Commander of the Oyo FRSC, Rosemary Alo, condemned the route violation and excessive speed, emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, especially in areas with ongoing construction.
“Motorists are often in a hurry, leading to avoidable loss of lives,” Alo said.
“In construction zones, commercial vehicle drivers and other road users must respect diversions and exercise patience, regardless of the time of day,” Alo continued.
The accidented vehicles have been towed to the Akobo Police Station to clear traffic congestion in the affected area near the General Gas axis.
The FRSC reiterated its call for strict compliance with traffic rules to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
