The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Awka, Anambra State, has commended President Bola Tinubu, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, and Education Permanent Secretary Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu for intervening in the university’s vice-chancellor selection process.

In a statement on Tuesday, signed by MDCAN Chairman Dr. Victor Modekwe, the association praised the government’s intervention, calling it a “significant step toward restoring confidence among academic community stakeholders.” Dr. Modekwe stated, “The decisive action taken to nullify the VC selection underscores the government’s commitment to upholding transparency and integrity in our educational institutions.”

Disputes arose after the Federal Ministry of Education nullified Prof. Bernard Odoh’s appointment as vice-chancellor, citing procedural violations. The ministry’s memo, signed by Mrs. Ilyasu, deemed the selection process a “gross disregard” for authority and inconsistent with regulations. The memo also voided the recent appointment of a new registrar.

In response, the university’s VC office urged the public to disregard the ministry’s statement, asserting that due process had been followed in Prof. Odoh’s appointment.

MDCAN also criticized the conduct of university Registrar Barr. Rosemary Nwokike, particularly her communications with the Ministry of Education. The association argued that Barr. Nwokike acted without Council authorization in her responses to the ministry and raised concerns about her perceived alignment with the Pro-Chancellor.

The association further noted that Barr. Nwokike’s continued use of outdated letterhead, listing an Acting VC, reflected “a lack of competence and disregard for established protocols.” MDCAN expressed concern about the integrity of her appointment and suggested potential conflicts of interest, adding that these issues undermine the dignity of her office.

MDCAN reiterated its commitment to collaborating with government authorities to uphold transparency and integrity in Nigeria’s educational institutions.
