A 45-year-old man, identified as Kazeem, tragically drowned in a river at Odo Tente, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun states. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Friday.
Kazeem reportedly consumed a hard drug suspected to be Colorado before the incident. Under the influence of the substance, he began acting erratically and, in a frenzied state, ran uncontrollably before jumping into the river.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, issued a statement on Sunday. It read, “On 11/10/2024 at about 11 a.m., a complainant reported at the Alagbado Division that one Kazeem, ‘M’, aged 45, under the influence of a hard drug suspected to be Colorado, ran uncontrollably and jumped into a river at the Odo Tente boundary between Lagos and Ogun states. Sequel to this, the victim drowned and died.”
Hundeyin further revealed that detectives from the Alagbado Division visited the scene, took photographs of the deceased, and initiated an investigation. The deceased’s father, when contacted, requested that his son’s body be buried immediately by the riverside, in accordance with their tradition.
In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, on January 31, expressed its commitment to partnering with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to raise awareness about substance abuse. The ministry also aims to provide rehabilitation and skills acquisition for Nigerian youths affected by drug use.
The Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio Ibrahim, gave this assurance during a visit to NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
