Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has predicted that the 2027 elections will be a showdown between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigerian people, rather than a traditional party contest. Makinde made these remarks on Saturday at the inauguration of the South-West zonal secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, which was named in honor of the late PDP South-West Zonal Vice Chairman, Soji Adagunodo.
Speaking to PDP leaders, Makinde urged unity against external forces that might seek to disrupt a strong opposition front for 2027. He emphasized that the future leadership of Nigeria would be decided by its citizens, with the PDP playing a critical role in consolidating support.
“People have been speculating and making accusations,” he stated. “But I’ll say this myself: nobody will set an agenda for me except myself—and that includes the ruling party and others.”
Makinde further criticized alleged attempts by the APC to weaken opposition parties but called on PDP members to focus on what’s within their control. “The next election will be APC versus Nigerians, not APC versus PDP,” he said. “Let us do our bit to unite our party and let the people of Nigeria speak.”
The governor underscored his independent approach to his political future and pledged cooperation with key PDP figures, including Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, to strengthen the party across the South-West. “Whether Governor Adeleke and I will work together for the growth of our party in the South-West is beyond the ruling party; it is between me and Governor Adeleke,” he declared.
Makinde encouraged PDP members to remain undeterred, assuring them that any external interference could only succeed if allowed. He also cited the upcoming Ondo governorship election as an important test for the party’s unity and strength as 2027 approaches.
