The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) in Kogi State has announced its reopening following a three-week closure prompted by student protests over fatal road accidents that claimed the lives of several students.
The university’s Senate convened an emergency meeting on Monday, March 10, 2025, where it approved the resumption of academic activities. According to a statement by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Dr Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, the institution will reopen on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with lectures set to commence on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The closure occurred after students protested the deaths of their colleagues in road accidents near the university’s permanent site. In one incident, an articulated truck lost control and collided with a shuttle bus transporting students, resulting in multiple fatalities.
In response to these tragedies, the university management engaged in consultations with various stakeholders to address the challenges leading to such accidents. The decision to reopen follows ongoing efforts to improve safety measures in the affected areas.
Students are expected to return to campus starting Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with lectures officially resuming on Monday, March 17, 2025.
