Liverpool Football Club has announced plans to honour the contract of its late forward, Diogo Jota, by continuing to pay his salary to support his family following his tragic death.
Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva—who played in Portugal’s second division—died in a fatal car accident shortly after midnight on Thursday. The brothers were reportedly en route to Santander, Spain, intending to board a ferry to England when their vehicle suffered a blown tire at approximately 12:35 a.m. local time in Zamora. The car crashed and caught fire, killing both men instantly.
In the wake of the tragedy, Liverpool expressed deep sorrow and pledged to remember Jota in a lasting way. According to Sportal, the club plans to commemorate the Portuguese star with a mural at Anfield, possibly featuring his final goal for the Reds.
More significantly, the club will reportedly continue paying Jota’s salary in full for the remaining duration of his contract, which was set to expire on June 30, 2027. The payments are intended to support his wife, Rute—whom he had recently married—and their three children. His contract was worth approximately $7 million annually, excluding performance-related bonuses.
Jota spent five years at Liverpool, becoming a fan favourite with his consistent performances and sharp finishing. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club across all competitions.
Liverpool’s gesture has been widely praised as a touching show of loyalty and humanity, reflecting the high regard in which Jota was held at Anfield and beyond.
