A deadly landmine explosion that struck Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State has claimed the life of a woman and left six others seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, during peak market hours around 2:40 p.m., disrupting commercial activities and sparking widespread panic among traders and residents.
According to a report released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Saturday, the explosion happened when a female victim unknowingly stepped on the concealed device.
She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency responders, but efforts to save her life were unsuccessful due to the severity of her injuries.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed that six other individuals were also caught in the blast and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility, the location of which is being withheld for security reasons.
In the aftermath of the explosion, the Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit of the Nigeria Police Force conducted a thorough sweep of the market area.
Security operatives cordoned off the scene to prevent further harm and later declared the environment safe, allowing normal activities to gradually resume.
The cause of the landmine and how it came to be in the market area remain under investigation. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or activities to security agencies.
