The Lagos State Government dismissed reports alleging that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent his arrest or prosecution after his term ends.
In a statement on Wednesday, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro clarified that the governor has not initiated any legal action against the anti-graft agency.
“We need to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at no time, sued or briefed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf concerning the above subject matter,” the statement read.
Pedro added that the government would investigate “how the case came to be without the knowledge” of the governor.
Pedro emphasized that as an incumbent governor with constitutional immunity, Sanwo-Olu would not need to file such a lawsuit, noting, “It is disingenuous for the governor who enjoys immunity as conferred on him by the Constitution and has almost three years ahead of him to brief any lawyer on this kind of matter.”
Pedro further clarified that there is no ongoing EFCC investigation involving the governor, nor has the agency made any move to arrest or question Sanwo-Olu or any member of his administration.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been an exemplar in terms of service delivery, prudent and judicious management of public resources,” Pedro said, adding that the governor is focused on enhancing the welfare of Lagosians and has no reason to be concerned about his tenure ending in May 2027.
The statement follows reports (not by Channels Television) circulating with the headline, “Sanwo-Olu Sues EFCC over Alleged Plan to Arrest, Prosecute Him After Tenure,” which the government has now firmly rebutted.
