The Labour Party (LP) officially launched its campaign for the Ogun State local government elections, scheduled for November 16, calling on the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to safeguard the integrity of the election process and ensure that the people’s votes count.
In a press briefing held Thursday at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta, the LP State Chairman, Lookman Jagun, raised concerns about alleged plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to manipulate the election outcome.
Jagun accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of “boasting about a 100 percent victory,” implying that the APC has already devised a strategy to secure an unopposed win in the elections.
He questioned the APC’s record, stating, “If I may ask, what is the scorecard of the APC? APC has brought nothing but hunger, misery, poverty, suffering, and tears to the people.”
Highlighting the economic hardships in Ogun State, Jagun noted the soaring prices of basic food items despite the state’s fertile land. “Garri, once a staple for the common man, is no longer affordable. Some families cannot afford to eat twice a day,” he added. “The scorecard is F9! At best, it’s P8.”
Jagun vowed that the LP would “resist any attempt to rig the election with the support of the impoverished people of Ogun State.” He also urged Governor Abiodun and OGSIEC Chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, to “write their names in gold” by ensuring a fair election.
Jagun revealed that out of the party’s 20 chairmanship candidates, six had already withdrawn from the race due to fears of an unfair playing field. However, 14 chairmanship candidates and 106 councillorship candidates remain committed to contesting the elections.
The Labour Party Chairman encouraged the people of Ogun State to “say goodbye to poverty and hunger” by voting LP, promising to bring “a breath of fresh air” to grassroots governance.
He outlined the party’s campaign priorities, including infrastructural development, agricultural advancement, primary healthcare, transparency, and accountability.
“We are committed to transforming the grassroots with effective governance that addresses the needs of the people,” Jagun concluded.
