Kwara Raises Health Insurance Premium Rate

The Kwara State Health Insurance Agency, announced on Friday, a revised increase in health insurance premiums for state enrollees, set to take effect on December 1, 2024.

This adjustment aims to offset the rising costs of drugs, medical supplies, and provider payments, which the government says are necessary to maintain high-quality healthcare services.

Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, the agency’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Olubunmi Jetawo-Winter, explained that inflation has pushed the number of enrollees up to 70,000 in the past two months, making the rate adjustment essential.

Under the new rates, informal sector premiums will rise from N6,000 to N15,500 per person annually, while formal sector premiums increase from N9,000 to N18,000.

The family package for the informal sector now costs N75,000 for six members, compared to N87,000 for the same package in the formal sector.

“This was a difficult decision for the government, but necessary due to rising costs,” Jetawo-Winter said, noting that premium reviews are typically done every three years, though the last review was seven years ago.

She highlighted that other states have already made similar adjustments, especially post-COVID, with Kogi and Ondo states implementing comparable rates.

“The NHIA recently increased drug and consumable tariffs and capitation fees for providers, with rates derived from premiums paid by beneficiaries,” she said.

“Kwara State is the last to adjust tariffs nationwide and remains among the most affordable in terms of healthcare access.

By paying a flat premium, residents can manage annual medical costs more predictably, covering everything from consultations and treatments to surgeries and drugs, as outlined in the benefits package,” she countinued.

Despite the increase, Jetawo-Winter assured residents that the scheme is still heavily subsidized, offering significant cost savings compared to out-of-pocket expenses.

“The Kwara State Health Insurance Agency asks for your cooperation and understanding during this transition period.

We remain committed to our promise of providing affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare for every resident of Kwara,” she added
