The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS), issued a strong warning against illegal tax collection activities, urging residents to meet their tax obligations.
The agency stressed that timely tax payments are essential for the state’s development and for facilitating government projects.
Chairman of KGIRS, Sule Enehe, made the appeal on Thursday in Lokoja while addressing journalists about the importance of tax compliance in advancing public sector initiatives.
Enehe emphasized that regular and prompt tax payments would empower Governor Usman Ododo’s administration to invest in vital infrastructure such as education, healthcare, roads, and water supply.
“When you declare your income and pay your taxes on time, the government will have the financial capacity to execute meaningful projects that directly benefit the people,” he stated.
He pointed to several key infrastructure projects funded through taxpayer’s contributions, including the Zone 8 Roundabout-Barrack-Zango-GYB Junction Road and the Zone 8 Roundabout-CBN-High Court Road.
Enehe also highlighted the payment of WAEC, JAMB, and BECE examination fees for public school students as an example of how tax revenue is being utilized for public welfare.
“If we maintain consistency in tax payments, the government will continue to roll out more impactful projects for the people,” he added.
In addition, the KGIRS Chairman issued a stern warning against illegal revenue collection practices.
He made it clear that any individual or group involved in such activities would face prosecution.
“It is a criminal offence to collect revenue intended for the government.
KGIRS is the only constitutionally recognized body authorized to collect taxes in Kogi State.
No associations or unions have the right to engage in revenue collection,” Enehe stated.
He also confirmed that individuals already found guilty of violating this law are facing legal proceedings, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to upholding tax regulations in the state.
