The Kebbi State Government has postponed the 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, originally scheduled for February 2025, to February 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement by the State Deputy Governor, Sen. Umar Abubakar Tafida, who also serves as the Chairman of the festival’s 2025 Committee.
Reason for the Postponement
According to the statement, the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and was driven by the need to undertake “a befitting and permanent repair of the structures at the festival’s venues.”
It further explained that “the decision was sequel to the ongoing road dualisation and a myriad of other developmental projects in Argungu township.”
Additionally, the Deputy Governor noted that other “peculiar reasons” also contributed to the decision to shift the event to 2026.
Commitment to a Grand Festival
Despite the postponement, the state government reassured the public of its commitment to delivering an outstanding festival that will celebrate Kebbi’s rich cultural heritage.
“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the public, stakeholders, and participants in this regard. Let us continue to work towards a brighter future for Kebbi State,” the statement added.
The Argungu Festival, one of Nigeria’s most renowned cultural events, attracts local and international visitors who gather to witness traditional fishing competitions, cultural displays, and other festivities.
