After weeks of frustration, Nwankwo Kanu-led Enyimba finally returned to winning ways with a 1-0 triumph over Rivers United, managed by former Super Eagles coach Finidi George.
The crucial win ended Enyimba’s three-match winless streak and marked only their second victory in nine games.
The game’s decisive moment came in the first half when Imo Obot unleashed a spectacular free-kick, leaving Rivers United’s goalkeeper rooted to the spot. Enyimba’s goalkeeper, Ani, had earlier pulled off a crucial save to keep the scores level before Obot’s strike put them ahead.
Both teams pushed for more goals in the second half, but Enyimba’s defense held firm, securing a much-needed three points.
Key Performances
Imo Obot: His sublime free-kick not only sealed the win but also crowned him the match’s standout performer.
Goalkeeper Ani: His early save proved vital in keeping Enyimba in contention and protecting their narrow lead.
The match carried added significance due to the history between the coaches. Enyimba’s current head coach, Stanley Eguma, once managed Rivers United, while Finidi George had previously led Enyimba for two years before switching to Rivers United at the start of the season.
Chairperson of Enyimba, Nwankwo Kanu, had opened the gates for fans to attend the game for free, a move that saw a strong turnout and vocal support that boosted the team’s morale.
Despite the victory, Enyimba remains in 10th place on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table. Rivers United, meanwhile, holds onto third position, with Remo Stars leading the league with 48 points, followed by Shooting Stars with 40 points.
