The Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in Garun Mallam Local Government Area of Kano State, has been indefinitely shut down following allegations of prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral activities within its premises.
Reports revealed that the market had become a hotspot for such acts, involving both youths and married women, prompting the local council to intervene.
Confirming the closure, Council Chairman Aminu Kadawa announced that all occupants had been given a seven-day ultimatum to vacate the market or face legal action.
He stated, “Considering how the market has degenerated into a hub for immoral activities contrary to its intended purpose, it has been closed indefinitely to restore order.”
Kadawa added that a date for the reopening of the market for regular commercial activities would be communicated in due course.
The Commissioner for Tourism and Management, Aisha Saji, commended the decision, recalling her previous efforts as Commissioner for Women Affairs to address similar concerns at the market.
She noted that a previous raid conducted with security agencies and Hisbah officials led to the arrest of 43 individuals, including 34 females and nine males aged between 15 and 18, for prostitution and illegal alcohol sales.
“Shockingly, 14 of the arrested individuals were confirmed HIV-positive, with 10 aware of their status and four unaware.
The suspects included residents from Kano and neighboring states like Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba,” Saji disclosed.
The Commissioner also advocated for the demolition of the market and the establishment of a skill acquisition center in its place to address unemployment and promote youth development.
“This closure should not only put an end to immoral activities but also pave the way for progress.
Establishing a skills development institution here will help curb unemployment and empower our youths with sustainable livelihoods,” she emphasized.
