Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has confessed he is yet to learn Nigeria’s reinstated national anthem, despite it being re-adopted nearly a year ago.
The Fulham star made the surprising revelation during an appearance on Nigerian YouTuber Chinasa Anukam’s dating show, Is This Seat Taken? When asked if he had memorized the anthem, Iwobi responded candidly:
“No… when it comes on, I literally stand there and close my eyes.”
In May 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a bill reintroducing Nigeria’s old national anthem, Nigeria, We Hail Thee, which had been replaced in 1978. The anthem, originally written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda, was reinstated to replace Arise, O Compatriots.
Iwobi’s admission might surprise fans, considering his regular appearances for the national team. However, his situation reflects the reality for many Nigerians who are still adjusting to the restored anthem.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has been actively preparing for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. According to reports, Chelle recently traveled to England to meet with key players, including Iwobi, as the team strategizes for the high-stakes matches.
Currently sitting fifth in Group C, the Super Eagles are in a tight race to secure a spot in the World Cup. They are set to face Rwanda on March 21 in Kigali before returning to Uyo for a home clash against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on March 25.
While some fans may raise eyebrows at Iwobi’s struggles with the anthem, most will be hoping his focus remains on delivering stellar performances on the pitch as Nigeria fights for qualification.
