Irish motorbike racer Louis O’Regan has died from injuries sustained during a qualifying session for the 2024 Manx Grand Prix, organizers confirmed on Sunday.
O’Regan, 43, was involved in an accident at Kate’s Cottage on the 37.73-mile (60-kilometer) circuit of the Manx Grand Prix, an annual amateur motorcycle race on the Isle of Man, considered a precursor to the famed Isle of Man TT races.
“With great sadness, the organisers of the Manx Grand Prix confirm that Louis O’Regan has died following injuries sustained in an accident during the opening qualifying session of the 2024 event,” the Manx Grand Prix said in a statement.
Described as an “experienced competitor,” O’Regan debuted at the event in the 2013 Newcomers A Race, finishing 12th.
His best lap speed was 114.7 mph, achieved during the 2019 Junior Race.
This tragic incident follows a series of fatalities at the race, including the deaths of Gary Vines and Ian Bainbridge during the 2023 qualifying sessions.
Inquests into these deaths were opened, and new tire regulations were introduced following Vines’ fatal accident.
