The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned Nigerians against engaging in multiple registration during the forthcoming Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise, warning that offenders risk being completely removed from the national voter register.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Plateau State, Alhaji Mohammed Sadiq, issued the warning during a stakeholders’ meeting on the resumption of CVR nationwide.
“Voter registration is not only a fundamental right, but also a duty of every eligible citizen of Nigeria,” Sadiq said, as quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday. “No individual can vote in an election unless they are duly registered. The commission will not accept multiple registration as any attempt to get involved in such an act may lead to such registrants being completely delisted from the register.”
He urged Nigerians aged 18 and above who are yet to register to “seize this opportunity and get their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).”
According to Sadiq, the CVR will begin on August 18 with online registration. He advised residents of Plateau who have previously registered to use the exercise to collect their PVCs.
“The online registration can take place anywhere and at any time. The website to visit is http://www.crv.inecnigeria.org,” he explained. “The exercise is basically for new voters that have attained the age of 18 and above, collection or transfer of PVC, and replacement of lost or damaged PVC.”
The REC stressed that measures have been put in place to prevent non-Nigerians from participating in the CVR. He appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, political parties, and other critical stakeholders to help sensitise eligible residents to take part in the exercise.
