The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decided to extend the voting period in specific areas of Edo State where the governorship election started late.
This move is aimed at ensuring that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots, despite earlier delays.
The decision was made in response to challenges that affected the timely commencement of the election in some polling units.
INEC emphasized that voting would continue in these locations until every voter who arrived by the official closing time of 2:30 pm has been attended to.
The extension aligns with the Commission’s regulations and guidelines for election conduct.
Reports from the INEC monitoring team revealed that while voting started on time in several areas, some polling stations experienced delays due to late arrivals of electoral officials and materials, as well as issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
To address power supply issues in affected polling units, backup electric generators were deployed to ensure smooth operations throughout the voting process.
This extension is part of INEC’s commitment to ensuring that no voter is disenfranchised during the electoral exercise.
