The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, directed a thorough investigation into the tragic boat mishap in Kogi State that occurred on Friday, leaving scores feared dead.

Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Saturday, disclosed that the IGP had instructed the Force Marine Officer to lead the probe.

“The aim is to identify contributing factors and develop actionable strategies to prevent similar occurrences on the nation’s waterways,” Adejobi said.

He added that the investigation would also provide critical insights for enhancing safety measures and emergency response systems in water transport across the country.

Expressing sympathy to the families of the victims and the people of Kogi State, the police chief assured that efforts to rescue missing passengers were ongoing.

“Resources and operational modalities have been activated to intensify search and rescue efforts,” the statement added.

The IGP also urged waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department in adopting and enforcing safety protocols to safeguard passengers and operators.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, at least 20 individuals have been rescued, while eight bodies have been recovered from the accident, which took place along the Dembo-Ebuchi stretch of the River Niger in Niger State.

The Chairman of Katcha Local Government Area, Abdullahi Saku, confirmed the figures during an on-site assessment.

He revealed that the overloaded boat was carrying over 200 passengers, mostly artisans and traders, when it capsized.

As rescue operations continue, the local community is calling on the Federal Government to dredge the Dembo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger up to Baro to reduce the frequency of such incidents.

Nigeria has witnessed an alarming increase in boat accidents in recent months, with many attributed to poor regulation, overcrowding, and lack of safety measures.

The Kogi tragedy underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight and enhanced safety practices on the nation’s waterways.

The investigation and rescue efforts launched by the police aim to address these concerns while offering hope for improved waterway safety in the future.
