Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun has mandated that organizations employing Supernumerary Police (SPY) officers must adhere to the newly introduced uniform standards.
The directive was issued during the official launch of the new SPY uniforms in Abuja.
Egbetokun emphasized, “As we unveil these new uniforms, it is imperative that all organizations using SPY personnel comply with the standard uniforms.”
He assured that the Force Quartermaster and state personnel will guide the registration process and distribution of the uniforms.
Additionally, Police Training Schools have been instructed to adopt this uniform issuance process.
The IGP also highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent unauthorized production and distribution of police uniforms, including those for SPY officers.
Represented by Deputy Inspector-General of Police for Administration and Finance, Bala Ciroma, Egbetokun described the new uniforms as a significant step toward enhancing the professionalism and visibility of SPY officers.
Egbetokun pointed out that Section 21(7) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 formally integrates the Supernumerary Police into the Nigeria Police Force, outlining their roles, supervision, and uniform requirements.
He noted that while the SPY Unit is a valuable part of the force, the lack of a standardized uniform has hindered its distinct identity and development.
