The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that a total of N15.6 billion has been disbursed to 5,225 family members and next of kin of deceased police officers between 2023 and 2024.
During a briefing at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Egbetokun provided a detailed breakdown, revealing that N9.85 billion was paid to 3,077 families over six different disbursement events between July 2023 and June 2024. He also announced that an additional N5.75 billion would be distributed to families in September 2024.
“These payments represent the largest disbursement ever made to families of deceased officers,” Egbetokun said. “It underscores our commitment to supporting the families of officers who sacrificed their lives in service to our great nation, Nigeria.”
The payments cover balance claims for insurance policies for the years 2018-2019, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024. Egbetokun expressed the Force’s dedication to easing the burden on the families of fallen officers.
“To the families gathered here, while we cannot replace your loved ones, we hope these payments offer some relief as you face the challenges ahead,” he added.
Egbetokun also emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of current police personnel. “As we honour our fallen heroes, we also renew our commitment to the well-being of the officers who continue to serve,” he said, commending the force’s insurance unit for ensuring timely claim settlements.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Cecilia Christopher expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General and urged him to assist the children of slain officers, many of whom are struggling to find employment. “This money will help us educate our children, but many of them are still jobless after graduating. We appeal to the IGP to help them secure jobs,” she said.
